30 Sep—YANKEE HAT PAINTINGS AND MIDDLE CREEK CASCADES—Easy (6)

Starting at the Yankee Hat car park, we walk along the track to the rock paintings, where we have morning tea. Then continue up the valley to the cascades for early lunch then over the open grasslands back to the car park. Cars: 110 km ($11). Maps: Rendezvous Creek, Yaouk. Meet at K.

Sun 1 Oct—PEAK 1101 AND TENNENT HOMESTEAD—11 km Medium (11)

This is a circular walk from the Namadgi Visitors Centre. We start up the Australian Alps Walking Track and ascend to the ridge north of Mt Tennent for morning break at the T junction at 845 645 (not shown on maps due to the new track alignment). We proceed north along the ridge line by track and mostly open bush to peak 1101 for some restricted views. For really superb views over the valley towards Tharwa and Rob Roy we find a rocky outcrop just east of peak 1108 through thicker bush for lunch. To get to the ruins of Tennent Homestead at 858 666 we will follow the least steep descent through variable bush. Then we rejoin the last kilometre of the Walking Track back to the start. Walking on old forest tracks, through tall gums and tree ferns, we start at McCarthy track (off Reisdale Road) walking through to Milo Road and then to Penance Grove with its ancient plumwood trees and mosses. Return by same route until we pick up the Lookout Track, which takes us back to Reisdale Road, with a further kilometre on dirt road back to the cars. Coffee at Braidwood on the return trip. Sun 8 Oct—NURSERY SWAMP TO RENDEZVOUS CREEK—12 km Medium (8)

A steady climb on Nursery Swamp track to saddle, nearly level over swamp and to next saddle, then downhill to cross Rendezvous Creek. Walk parallel to the creek to a lunch spot beside refreshing cascades. Return via same route. Total climb 400 m. Cars: 90 km ($9). Maps: Rendezvous Creek Meet at K.

Walk from the Wog Wog car park into Bibbenluke on the first day to establish a base camp there. Day walks to surrounding features including Angel Creek, Mt Cole, Mt Owen and Mt Tarn. Return to Wog Wog on the final day. Experience glorious wilderness scenery and stunning views from the mountains. The going ranges from boardwalks to steep and/or rough, trackless terrain. We climb up Castle Hill from Booroomba Road to enjoy wonderful views of the mountains and the surrounding countryside. We follow tracks to Paddys River and return cross-country to the cars. Total climb 200 m. Cars 40 km ($4). Maps: Tuggeranong. Meet at K.

Sun 15 Oct–Sun 22 Oct —CAR CAMP—YARRA RANGES NATIONAL PARK—Easy and medium walks

We will camp in the Upper Yarra Reservoir Park which has a large camping area but no powered sites. It has hot showers, toilets and a large wet weather hall with refrigerators, boiling water and undercover barbecues. Costs: Approx $8 a night. There are caravan parks at Warburton and Maryville, both about 20 km from the camping area. There will be two walks each day, predominantly easy but perhaps a medium a day as well. Drive from Canberra is about 7-8 hours. Contact leader if you wish to attend.

Walk from Kambah Village through the western part of Kambah to Mcquoids Hill. From there we will complete a circuit using equestrian and fire trails, climbing Mt Arawang and walking Cooleman Ridge on our way back to Kambah Village. We will be walking through open country, no shade. Total climb 300 m. Maps: Canberra. Meet at K.

This is a circular walk from the Yankee Hat Walking Track car park. We will visit the Aboriginal rock art, Frank and Jack’s hut (for lunch), Hospital Creek Hut and Foresters Hut. Most of the walk is on tracks but there will be some parts off track through fairly open bush and not difficult under foot. Total climb: 290 m. Cars: 100 km ($10). Maps: Yaouk. Meet at K.

Sun 29 Oct—SNOWY CORNER, MT DOMAIN AND FISHING GAP—11 km Hard (12)

The walk starts from the Lyre Bird Trail in the Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve. We climb steeply up 570 m to Snowy Corner, then follow the ridge to Mt Domain where there are good views over the Brindabellas. From Mt Domain we wind our way back to Fishing Gap and down the fire trail to the Fishing Gap car park. A car shuffle will be required. Cars: 80 km ($*). Maps: Tidbinbilla. Meet at W

Meet at Torrens, at 4.30 p.m. for entrée, then on to Fadden, for dinner, then to Mawson, for dessert, then back to Torrens for coffee and tea: about three hours walking. Bring a torch. We plan to walk between these homes, but if it rains we will drive. BYO drinks Please ring Sue by Tuesday 31 October to organise food contributions for the dinner.

A classic walk from Yankee Hat car park via former pine forest tracks to Mt Gudgenby and return. About one half on roads. The 750 m climb is now rough, steep and scrubby. I am planning to take the climb part slowly, and also spend enough time at the top to explore the wonderful rock formations extending nearly 1 km to the north of the peak on a slightly lower rock platform, so we may get back late. From Blundells flat climb 500 m up a steep fire road and diverting to Coree Falls. Returning to Pabral Road, follow Two Sticks Road and return by the now closed section. Cars: 80 km ($8). Maps: Cotter Dam. Meet at W.

From gate above Burrungubugge River walk to near Kidmans Hut, 8 km, 300m climb. Second day 4 km to campsite, 400m exploratory climb. Third day, day pack to Jagungal, 14 km, 200m climb. From the Wyanbene Cave car park we walk up to the cave entrance and then NE along the Minuma Range for about 2 km. We then head SE along the ridge leading to Mt Beroury in the wilderness area of the Deua NP. Return via same route. All off track; climb about 400 m. Cars: 200 km ($20). Maps: Krawarree. Starting at Mt Ginini summit, we go down Harry’s Spur Fire Trail, then off track, steep and rough in places, to the big waterfall on the river for lunch. Back the same way. Climb 900 m. Fire trail overgrown but ok. Forest only lightly burnt, river beautiful, a good workout. Cars: 140 km ($14). Maps: Corin Dam, Peppercorn. Meet at W at 8.00 a.m. ***

Sun 19 Nov—BLUE GUM HILL (formerly Mt Lincoln)—11 km Medium (9)

From the locked gate at the northern end of Smokers Trail we will walk through pleasant open bush to Blue Gum Hill (previously known informally as Mt Lincoln). In clear weather there are excellent views. We will return via a ridge to the south and west and join Smokers Trail back to the cars. Climb: 400 m. Some bushfire damage. Cars: 60 km ($6). A pretty walk through the reserve from the Captains Flat Road along the side of a gorge and return to cars on different route through reserve with views over Queanbeyan. Mostly on tracks or footpads but approx. 3 km of rough walking along the gorge. Total climb: 100 m. Maps: Bungendore. Meet at Q at 9.30 a.m. ***

We plan to drive to the locked gate at the end of the Pocket Road (1300 m), eat, camp the night by the cars, then do a day walk to Mt Murray and back. The walk is mainly along fire trails; 3 km to Oldfields Hut, 3.5 km up the trail to Murrays Gap, then 1 km off track, steeply up 300 m to Mt Murray (1845 m). Total climb 750 m. Cars: 300 km ($30). Starting at Bulls Head, we will go along Moonlight Hollow Road, then to Bendoura Arboretum for lunch. We will go back to the cars by going along the ridge-top track close to the Mt Franklin Road but taking in Bushrangers Hill, Forest Knob etc. Total climb is 500 m but distributed through the walk. Sat-Sun 2-3 Dec—PACK WALK—MT NAMADGI—21 km Medium (11)

On Saturday afternoon we will walk from the Yankee Hat car park up Middle Creek and camp overnight on its upper reaches (about 6 km). On Sunday we will go up Mt Namadgi (about 550 m climb) with day packs only and enjoy exploring the top plateau. In the afternoon we will come back to the camp area (about 9 km) and walk back to the cars (about 6 km). Cars: 130 km ($13). Maps: Rendezvous Creek, Yaouk. This is a walk on the fire break (a fire trail with wide grass verges) along the crest of the Brindabellas. Temperatures should be about 8 deg cooler than forecast for Canberra. A pleasant walk with views, and some nice forest. Total climb 400 m distributed during day. Maps: Tidbinbilla. Cars: 120 km ($15 because of car shuffle). Meet at K.

Walk from the Wog Wog entrance on rough track to this popular spot in the Western Budawangs. There is interesting vegetation and there will be an opportunity for swimming at the cascades if summer has arrived. Cars: 250 km ($25). Maps: Corang. Meet at Q at 8.00 a.m. ***

Set out from the Arboretum along Sunny Corner Trail to weir. Then cross Condor Creek and climb 470 m through scrub to Hill 1215 for lunch. After lunch we drop down Two Sticks Road to Piccadilly Circus. Return to cars via old fire trail. Total climb: 600 m. Cars 80 km ($8). Maps: Cotter Dam. Meet at W.

A pleasant summer stroll with wonderful views. We will walk from Uriarra Road, near intersection with Coppins Crossing Road, up to the ruins of Mt Stromlo Observatory and proceed on to the Bushfire Memorial, off Cotter Road. We return via the western slopes of Mt Stromlo. This is a somewhat decadent walk with the opportunity for cappuccinos along the way. Total climb 150 m. Meet at W.

Start at Round Mountain and walk to Mt Jagungal to join the Alpine Walking track, and then follow the track into Tharwa. Walkers will be able to join or leave the walk at Kiandra or Tantangara. Please contact Derek by 21 December to discuss transport arrangements.
