Sat 1 Oct—MT FAUNCE TRIG—11 km. Easy (7)

A walk along the ridge to the east of Jumping Creek, a tributary of the Queanbeyan river. Start on the outskirts of Queanbeyan and walk around a pleasant valley then a steep climb to the ridge. Continue along the ridge to Mt Faunce trig and then to lunch spot overlooking Googong dam. Return by very steep scramble to the valley floor and then to the cars, with a short hill at the end. Great views from ridge top and spring flowers. All on fire trails and foot pads but very steep climbs. Meet at Q.

From Blundells Flat climb 500 m up a steep fire trail to Mt Blundell, continue along Blue Range and Two Sticks Fire Trail for 6 km and then 1.5 km through bush to Devils Peak (1310 m). Return downhill to Pabral Fire Trail. Cars: 80 km ($8). Map: Cotter Dam. Meet at W.

If you want a relaxing weekend in the bush with some light pack walking, try this. Friday: walk from Orroral to Rendezvous Creek and camp on the flat area across the creek. Saturday: explore the Rock Flats area without packs. Sunday: walk out the way we came in. Please phone Colin or Val B by Friday 30 September for arrangements.

From the Boboyan (Yankee Hat) car park walk along the Old Boboyan Rd to Franks Hut then on to Hospital Creek Hut. Then north along the creek to the falls for lunch. Pick up a fire trail and return to cars. Total climb 150 m. Cars: 100 km ($10). Map: Yaouk. Meet at K.

Sun 9 Oct—MONGA NATIONAL PARK GONDWANAN RAINFOREST RAMBLE—Easy. Family Walk. Leader: Paula W. Come along and explore some rainforest loop walks and other spots in the newly established Monga National Park, with ancient pinkwoods and towering tree ferns. Bring morning tea and some lunch to have on the banks of the Mongarlowe River. Meet at Braidwood War Memorial, Main Street, Braidwood (approx. 1 hours drive from Canberra), 10.30 a.m.

From Brandy Flat south car park follow Brandy Flat fire trail for about 2 km, then climb west slope of Booth Range to the summit. Then south along the range for 2-3 km and back down the west slope to the cars. Total climb about 770 m. Cars 100 km ($10). Map: Michelago. Meet at K.

Crossover walk. One party walks along the fire trail starting at Glendale Crossing to Brandy Flat Hut and then south to the road near Gudgenby with a 270 m climb. Second party does reverse with 430 m climb. Car shuffle will be necessary if there is only one party. Cars: 100 km ($10). Map: Michelago. Meet at K.

There is a new start to this walk. Total climb of 950 m through open country and varied bushland, almost all on fire trail, to a clear rocky summit with excellent views of the southern ACT mountains and the northern Kosciusko National Park. Sun 23 OctNAVIGATION TRAINING

Leader: Trevor B. Trevor will conduct a one-day introductory navigation course in a bush land setting within the ACT. The first part of the course will be spent going through some of the principles behind map reading and compass navigation. The second part will apply the theory in navigating around simple navigation routes through a bush terrain. If you have (or can borrow) a Silva-type compass (or other brand), bring it along, but don’t go and buy one. Mapping material and notes will be supplied. Please contact the leader by Sunday 16 Oct to book a place on the course.

Family Walk-Moderate.
Leader: Bruce B. 8.5 km return (4- 5 hours). Medium family walk. Explore huge granite boulders, Alpine Ash forests and Snow Gum woodlands. Views from both end points. Bring lunch. Meet at Smokers Gap on Corin Road (off Tidbinbilla Road) at 10 a.m.

From Mt Ginini car park (now accessible after fire closure) we climb the short ascent to Mt Ginini , then continue south along the Mt Franklin Rd to Mt Gingera, from where there are excellent views in all directions. Return the same way. Almost all on fire trails or roads. Cars: 170 km ($17). Map: Corin Dam. Meet at W.

. From the Kennedy Road near Old Yaouk we climb steadily to the Mount Scabby summit (about 700m). We will then go north along the ACT border for about 1 km and then descend back down to Old Yaouk Ck and back to the cars. Mostly off-track and some steep rocky terrain. Cars: 180 km ($18). Climb 700 m up Hume and Hovell Track from the Fitzpatrick Trackhead on Wee Jasper Creek through open forest to top of Mount Wee Jasper for lunch. Return by the same route. Cars: 170 km ($17). Map: Couragago. Meet at W at 8:00 a.m.—note time. ***

Sun 30 Oct—RENDEZVOUS CREEK TO YANKEE HAT ROCK ART—11 km Easy (7). Leader: Mac K. This walk is all in open, undulating, short grass country, with a couple of short sections on tracks. We follow the track on the south side of Rendezvous Creek for about a kilometre, then strike due west along a low ridge for 2 km, looping around to cross Middle Creek and head south to the Yankee Hat rock art. We return via the Yankee Hat walking track to Bogong Creek, and follow the creek to cross Middle Creek where the two creeks meet. We return to the cars via a series of low hills. Total climb 200 m. Cars 130 km ($13). Maps: Rendezvous Creek, Yaouk. Meet at K.

Tue–Fri 1–4 Nov—MID-WEEK RUSTIC RETREAT: THE PINES AT CURRANGO—Joint activity with the KHA. Organiser: Margaret R. A booking has been secured for The Pines, the former workmens’ quarters for the nights of Tuesday–Thursday 1–3 November (daylight saving, yet ahead of the March flies!). Arrive mid-morning on the Tuesday, lunch and inspect the precincts, afternoon stroll to Pockets Hut. Wednesday and Thursday activities can include Oldfields Hut and Mt Bimberi or Murray, (whilst dropping fisherpersons who cannot resist the lure ) into promising creeks along the way. Similarly, we can pick up the sketchers and etchers from their various glades on the way back! Friday, after packing up, visit some of the huts in the Gulf downstream from Tantangara Dam (or a swim in Yarrangobilly Pool?) In the evenings -shared BBQ meals. Note: Camping is not permitted in or around the precinct. It will be first in, first served. Sun 6 Nov—NORTH-NORTH WEST RIDGE OF MOUNT MAJURA—Easy
Family Walk.
Leader: Chris H. 4 km return walk exploring this interesting and less visited part of Mount Majura. Features include historic stone walls and old farming contraptions. Aim to get to the ridge and beyond. Meet at car park on nature reserve side of Antill Street, Watson, between the Prime TV station and the Australian Heritage Village, 10 a.m.

First day we will walk 12 km from Orroral Tracking Station Picnic area along the Alpine walking track to a campsite with a climb of 250 m. Second day we climb Coronet Peak 400 m to Creamy Flats Creek with day packs. Third day we walk out the same way. Camping permit will restrict numbers to 6. Sun 13 Nov—MIDDLE CREEK, GUDGENBY AREA—10 Easy (7)

Starting at the Yankee Hat car park, we walk along the track to the rock paintings, where we have morning tea. Then continue up Middle Creek to an unnamed tributary and up to hill 1107 m for lunch. Return, via the Middle Creek cascades, over the open grasslands back to the car park. Total climb 250 m. Cars: 110 km ($11). Maps: Rendezvous Creek, Yaouk. Meet at K.

Sun 13 Nov—BLUE GUM HILL (MT LINCOLN) FROM BOOROOMBA—9 km Medium (11). Leader: Peter W. Starting at 792616 near the Booroomba Rocks car park, we walk 3.5 km north to Bluegum Hill, then back by a route slightly to the west. Generally open forest. Total climb is 520 m, of which 200 m is steep. Cars: 65 km ($7). Map: Corin Dam. Meet at K

Mon-Fri 14–18 Nov—MYALL LAKES—All walks graded easy

Drive up on Monday and return on Friday. Two or three full days walking and maybe one day canoeing. The Myall Lakes Caravan Park has a variety of cabins and camping. There is also a national park camping area a few kilometres away. The drive from Canberra to Myall Lakes takes about six hours. Please contact leader by 1 Nov.

Family Walk–Moderate.
Leader: Bruce B. This will be an introductory overnight pack walk for the kids, away from the cars. We will walk approx. 6 km in to a camp site near Marble Arch, going past the Big Hole. Need to bring some water and water containers for evening cooking. Contact leader for further details.

Fri–Mon 18–21 Nov—THE PILOT FROM DEAD HORSE GAP—Pack walk – Medium (long). Leader: Doug F. This pack walk will visit one of the more remote areas of the Great Dividing Range near the NSW/Victoria border. Starting at dead Horse Gap, we will take two days to get to The Pilot along the Cascades Fire Trail (quite easy walking, ≈ 20km). Camping near Carters Hut and the Tin Mine Diggings we will climb The Pilot on Day 3 and explore the surrounding area (≈15km, 600m climb). Return to Dead Horse Gap along the Cascades Fire Trail on Day 4 if we’re feeling fit. Maps: Thredbo, Suggan Buggan (1:50,000). Sat 19 Nov—MOUNT MCDONALD—10 km Easy (6)

Madeleine H. Walk from the Cotter Bridge through Stoney Creek Nature Reserve. Fine views of the Murrumbidge River and Cotter Dam before we climb to the top of the mountain. On the way down we will call in at Casuarina Sands Lookout. 400 m climb. Cars: 20 km ($2). Map: Cotter Dam. Meet at W.

A 2 km stroll along Mill Creek to the wetlands and back home for dinner. Meet at Alan J house at Narrabundah, at 5.30 p.m. BYO drinks only. Please ring Alan by the day before if you are coming.

Sat 19 Nov—THREE PEAKS ABOVE CORIN ROAD—10 km Medium (11)

Leader Trevor B. Starting point is 2 km along Corin Road from Tidbinbilla Road. We will climb steeply up and down three peaks. Plenty of rock scrambling, steep grades and views along the way. Strong footwear needed. Cars 60 km ($6). Map: Tidbinbilla. Meet at K.

Sun 20 Nov—TINDERRY PEAK FROM SE—13 km Hard (13)

From the gate (at 069432) on the Tinderry Road we will walk north on a fire trail 5 km climbing, then along a scrubby ridge west for 2.5 km to the peak for views, (some rock scrambling), then 3 km cross-country down Roberts Creek, and 2 km back on fire trail. A classic walk, very satisfying, total climb 500 m. Cars 140 km ($14). Map: Tinderry. Meet at K at 8:30.***

A circuit track walk starting from North Lyneham shops and taking in O'Connor Ridge and Black Mountain, all within nature reserves. Undulating with not much climbing. Lunch at the Botanic Gardens. Meet at NL.

Sun 27 Nov—CORIN DAM VIEW & BLACK SPRINGS VIA FISHING GAP—14 km very exploratory, hard. Leader: Colin B. This is an attempt to see if we can combine our ‘Corin Dam View’ walk with a descent down a spur to the Cotter River to join the track back to Fishing Gap. It looked feasible before the fire. Take the fire trail to Fishing Gap, then up the steep ridge to the south and westward through open forest to a view towards Corin Dam and Gingera. Then descend the spur to the Cotter near Black Springs and return by the track to Fishing Gap (if we can still find it). Total climbing 800 m. Cars: 70 km ($7). Map: Tidbinbilla. Sun 27 Nov—WILD CATTLE AND BALLINAFAD CREEKS—14 km Med (11)

Peter W. This walk will be different from the other walk in the area in that we will go higher up the creeks. We will leave the cars on the fire trail at GR246484 go 1 km south down to the creek, the do a circuit up Ballanifad Creek and back down Wild Cattle Creek. Tussocky creek flats, and open forest with scattered light scrub. Total climb 360 m. Maps: Tinderry, Kain. Cars: 120 km ($12). Meet at Q at 8:30 **.

From Kambah Village to the top of Mt Taylor, then along the ridge to Mt Wanniassa, then north to Mt Sheaffe and Mugga Mugga. Descend to Woden town centre and return by bus to the start. (weekend timetable to be consulted). Cars: Nil. Map: Canberra. Meet at K.

Sun 4 Dec—CYPRESS PINE LOOKOUT—Easy
Family Walk.
Leader: Michael D. Return walk of approximately 4 km from Namadgi National Park Visitors Centre to Cypress Pine Lookout, along part of the Alpine Walking Track. Steep in places. Meet at Namadgi National Park Visitors Centre, Naas Road, south of Tharwa, 10 a.m.

Sun 4 Dec—MOONLIGHT HOLLOW ROAD—BENDOURA ARBORETUM—15 km Medium (8). Leader: J. Starting at Bulls Head we will go along Moonlight Hollow Road, then to Bendoura Arboretum for lunch. We will go back to the cars by going along the ridge-top track close to the Mt Franklin Road but taking in Bushranger Hill, Forest Knob etc. Total climb is 500 m but distributed throughout the walk. Sat 10 Dec—ORRORAL HERITAGE WALK—12 km Easy (7)

A walk exploring the early and more recent history of the area through interpretive signs along the track. Starting from the Orroral camping ground we follow a trail that leads into the Orroral Valley. We head up the valley stopping at places of interest. We continue up the valley and return off track following the river until
we meet the track back to the camp ground. Total climb 200m: Cars: 80km ($8). Maps: Rendezvous Creek. Meet at K.

Sun 11 Dec—CORANG LAGOON & CASCADES, MORTON NATIONAL PARK—12 km Medium (9). Leader: Doug F. Walk from the Wog Wog entrance on rough track to this popular spot in the Western Budawangs. There is interesting vegetation and there will be an opportunity for swimming at the cascades if summer has arrived. Cars: 250 km ($25). Map: Corang. Meet at Q at 8.00 (early start). ***

Mar 2006—TASMANIA PACK-WALKING: EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST

is seeking expressions of interest in 2-weeks pack-walking in Tasmania during early March 2006 that will include Frenchman’s Cap. Please phone Doug by end August.

Sun–Sat 19–25 March 2006—TUMUT AREA WALKS—Medium (10-11)

The plan is to stay a week in Tumut, with six one-day walks on tracks or fire trails. Two walks will be on sections of the Hume and Hovel Track from Thomas Boyd Trackhead (16 km, 250 m climb/950 m descent; 19 km, 300 m climb) walked as day walks. Other walks, in the southwest of the Kosciusko NP, are recommended by the Tumut and District Bushwalkers Inc. Preference will be given to walkers who are FBI leaders. Contact Peter W if interested, and he will send an email with fuller information on the walks and accommodation.
